Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead Wednesday in her home in what police are investigating as a domestic violence case.

Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is in custody after fleeing the scene. Authorities later located and arrested him in Plantation.

Police went to the home around 10 a.m. for a wellness check after a concerned friend could not reach Metayer Bowen. Officers discovered her body inside, Coral Springs Police Chief Brad Mock said.

Officials have not released her cause of death but confirmed the case is being treated as domestic violence.

Metayer Bowen, 38, was the first Black and Haitian American woman elected to the Coral Springs City Commission. She was reelected in 2024 without opposition.

An environmental scientist and community advocate, she was widely seen as a rising political figure and an active voice for the Haitian Diaspora.

Officials across Florida expressed shock and grief following her death.

This is a developing story.
