An undetermined number of people died after a ship capsized near the Terminal Varreux port in Port-au-Prince on Dec. 23, a source at the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH) told The Haitian Times.
Authorities have not yet determined the number of injured, missing, or the extent of the damage, the source added.
“This unfortunate accident unfortunately resulted in loss of human life,” Terminal Varreux posted on X, formerly Twitter. “The Terminal Varreux expresses its deep regret following the accident.”
Terminal Varreux announced that cabotage operations have been temporarily suspended following the accident.
The ship, Maelys Lome II, was carrying vehicles and merchandise, operating between Southern Haiti and Port-au-Prince. Videos and images of the red and white ship, overturned in the water went viral on Monday. In the images and videos circulating online, trucks tilted sideways can be seen on the ship while items are scattered in the water.
“This isn’t something that’s small,” one man said in a video of the overturned ship.
The ship capsized after a truck on board made a “poor maneuver,” destabilizing the vessel during loading, Terminal Varreux said.
“The boat will be straightened and reconditioned by its owner without delay,” Terminal Varreux writes. “For now, it lies half-submerged, outside the international docks area.”
Maelys Lome II belongs to JP Haiti Trans, was built in 1970, weighs 2401 tons, and is 75 meters long, according to Terminal Varreux.
Maelys Lome II’s accident occurred just 10 days after the La Cecilia ship sank in Petit-Goâve, a western commune. Authorities said one person died, 21 survived and a dozen remain missing.
These two incidents underscore the urgent need for significant reforms in Haiti’s maritime sector.
