CAP-HAITIEN — A security guard shot and killed two men attempting to steal money from Cap Madeline, a gas station in Madeline, on the outskirts of downtown Cap-Haïtien, around 2 a.m. on Friday, police said.

“Individuals attempting to rob a business doesn’t happen very often [in Cap-Haïtien],” said Arold Jean, spokesperson for the police force in the Northern Department. “But everybody knows there are thieves out there.”

Two other individuals involved in the attempted theft fled the scene. They were wearing ski masks and were armed, exchanging gunfire with the security guard, Jean added. A glass window at the gas station was shattered during the incident, as shown in viral photos.

Authorities have not yet revealed the identity of the security guard.

The two men who died were identified as Robenson Cadet, 31, and Christian Pierre, 36. A firearm and two motorcycles were found at the scene, suggesting the men were using motorcycles, according to local reporter Donatus “T Carry” Henry-Claude. Motorcycles are a common mode of transportation for those engaged in criminal activities in Cap-Haïtien,

Jean said police are pursuing the two individuals who fled and have started an investigation.

Cap-Haïtien is generally safer than Port-au-Prince, but there have been reports of accumulated violent incidents in recent weeks.

On Sept. 18, individuals on motorcycles shot and killed Kerwin Augustin, the then-regional director of the National Office of Migration, near his home in Centre Medico—a Cap-Haïtien quarter. Augustin was transported to Justinian University Hospital, where he died. The assailants shot him as he was returning from a party with his wife, according to Le Nouvelliste.

On Sept. 21, armed individuals shot Raoul Curius, an entrepreneur, inside his money exchange business on Street 13 B-C. Curius was immediately taken to the hospital and survived the gunshot injuries.
