Rutshelle wins Nuits d’Afrique 2024 francophone artist prize

On July 22 HMI (Haitian Music Industry) star Rutshelle Guillaume was awarded the Nuits d’Afrique Prize for Francophone. The prize was presented during the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique, a festival held annually in Montreal that highlights the work of African and Caribbean artists through a series of exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and concerts. 

“This award is a celebration of the richness of the Francophone and the power of music to unite people. Let’s continue to celebrate cultural diversity together,” she posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. 

Guillaume also shared on Facebook how “deeply honored” she is and thanked her “family, friends, collaborators, and the audience.” Guillaume went on to write that their “support drives [her] creativity and passion.”

Guillaume’s career as a singer-songwriter began in the early 2000s. She quickly rose to fame captivating audiences with her unique sound and stage presence. The subject of Guillaume’s songs range from love, relationships, and social issues all while incorporating traditional sounds and rhythmsaspects of of konpa.

She also utilizes her platform and following to empower Haitian women, and has frequently spoken about the importance of women receiving education and asserting their rights in both personal and professional settings.

Past recipients of the award include Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango and Malian singer-songwriter Salif Keita. 

The award recognizes the contributions of Caribbean and African artists that promote the visibility and enhancement of Francophone culture through their music.
