As the world prepares for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Jeffrey “B-Boy Jeffro” Louis is set to represent the United States in the debut of breakdancing on the Olympic stage. The 29-year-old, originally from Houston, Texas, and of Haitian descent, is known for his gravity-defying moves and dynamic performances.
“With Paris 2024 on the way, I’m looking to just solidify myself as a top breaker, a competitor, but at the same time just represent myself and what I believe,” Louis said in a 2023 Team USA video.
Louis began breakdancing when we was 12 years old, after his older brother introduced him to the sport.
“My older brother, he was introduced to breaking in middle school, and then when he got home, he … taught it to me,” Louis said. “[He] taught me the foundations, brought me to the community events, and from there I just took it all.”
Paris 2024 marks the first time the sport will be included in the Olympic Games. Breaking was initially introduced to the Olympics in the youth division in 2018. At the time, Louis had just graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in sports kinesiology, and wrote a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to encourage them to add breaking to other games other than the Youth Olympics.
Fast forward six years later, breaker finds himself on the international Olympic stage, bringing the sport to millions.
“You really have to just be obsessed with breaking to progress in this sport, and alot of it is just being disciplined enough to just by yourself in a garage for hours and just create,” he said. “That creativity is what separates you as a breaker.”
Men’s breaking will take place in Paris on Aug. 10, 2024 in La Concorde Urban Park.
