Sandy Zamor-Calixte and her daughter sat outside of the Morning Star Baptist Church on a warm and sunny election day in Mattapan, Massachusetts. She pulled her daughter tight with her left arm and flashed a bright smile at her phone’s camera, taking selfies in front of one of the signs at the polling center. She was careful to get her “I voted” sticker in the frame.
“Being of Haitian descent, being able to vote is a privilege,” she said. “We make sure that we exercise our right.”
With over 80,000 Haitian inhabitants, Massachusetts is home to one of the largest Haitian populations in the country. The majority of this community is concentrated in Mattapan, a town twenty minutes from downtown Boston.
At two prominent polling stations in the area, the Haitian community came out in large numbers to support Kamala Harris, who went on to win Massachusetts. Voters steadily filtered in and out at both locations, both held at Baptist churches.
“We are going to come out and we are going to come out strong,” said Zamor-Calixte, who is the Chief of Communications and External Affairs at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.

Russell Holmes, the representative of Suffolk’s sixth district, was outside of the church shaking hands and talking with his constituents.
He said that he expects that 90-95% of Mattapan will vote against Trump in the election, given the large Haitian population and how important this election is to the Haitian community.
“[Trump] has made it clear that he does not respect them,” he said.
The Associated Press called the race for Harris at 8:00 p.m.
As of this writing, more than half of states across the country have closed their polls as voters wait for the final results of the 2024 elections.
