Earlier this month, Haitian model, actress, and author Tico Armand attended Room to Read’s annual New York gala on May 9 to support literacy and girls’ education programs in communities facing deep inequities.
“As an artist, I understand the importance of representation and identity,” said Armand who delivered remarks at the gala. “It strengthens our sense of belonging while fostering empathy and understanding of and for others.”

In 2023, Armand partnered with Room to Read to publish her bilingual children’s book “A Cheeky Greeting” or Bo Jantiyes for their Ansanm Collection, created and published by Haitian authors and distributed to under-resourced Haitian communities throughout Florida. The children’s book is a story that touches on why greeting each other with kisses on the cheek is a part of Haitian culture.

The organization facilitates learning and literacy opportunities for children across the world.
“[This celebration] is about more than representation in books that children can read in their mother tongue and can physically see themselves in those pages,” she said. “This celebration holds personal significance. It’s personal because as an author, I have never felt as seen, heard, and empowered as I do now.”
