WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Haitian Ladies Network (HLN) hosted its Annual Haitian Ladies Weekend in Washington, D.C. this past week gathering over 500 Haitian women from around the world to celebrate empowerment, culture, and connection. The event, held from Oct. 11-13, featured a lineup of prominent Haitian women in business, government, arts, and activism, with keynote addresses and special remarks underscoring the theme of “Igniting Our Power.”
A highlight of the weekend was the keynote address by fashion designer and activist Stella Jean at the 19th Annual Haitian Ladies Brunch. Jean was set to speak on the resilience of Haitian women and their power to drive change locally and globally. As attendees shared their reflections of the weekend on social media, the word “healing” appeared repeatedly.
Adding to the excitement, Garcelle Beauvais—a Haitian-born actor, producer, and best-selling author—delivered special remarks at the annual brunch that celebrates sisterhood and culture. Beauvais, known for her roles in film and television, has long been a prominent advocate for the Haitian community.
“Haitian Ladies Network put together such an inspirational aspirational joyful weekend with the most incredible women! Honored to have been a part of it!,” Beauvais wrote on Instagram with emojis of the Haitian flag and hearts, shortly after the event.
“HLN is committed to empowering Haitian women by providing a platform where we can come together to celebrate our shared heritage and work towards a brighter future,”Kearns said in a press release about the event.
Among other notable figures in attendance was Her Excellency Dominique Dupuy, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Haitians Living Abroad, who purportedly opened the symposium with a speech on the role of Haitian women in leadership and governance.
Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, the first Black woman to represent Florida’s 20th congressional district, was also set to address attendees.
Over the course of the weekend, participants engaged in workshops and panels aimed at fostering personal and professional growth, with topics ranging from entrepreneurship and civic engagement to health and wellness.
The “Engaging with Haiti” panel featured prominent voices such as Vélina Élysée Charlier, a member of the pro-democracy movement Nou Pap Dòmi, and Danièle Magloire, a spokesperson for Kay Fanm (Women’s House.)
Attendees also had the opportunity to connect through curated networking events, including a vibrant Haitian marketplace, a wellness lounge hosted by Kreyòl Essence, and a cultural showcase featuring music, dance, and storytelling.
Nadine Duplessy Kearns, HLN’s founder, in preparation for the weekend, spoke to the importance of creating a space where Haitian women can come together to share their stories, support each other, and spark change.
“HLN is committed to empowering Haitian women by providing a platform where we can come together to celebrate our shared heritage and work towards a brighter future,” Kearns said in a press release about the event.
