BROOKLYN — The search is on for Haitian Creole-speaking part-time canvassers to work in Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood from June to August 31, 2024. The initiative, led by CUNY’s Haitian Studies Institute, aims to improve the efficiency and safety of Flatbush Avenue, a key transit corridor serving thousands of bus riders daily.
Part-time canvassers will engage bus riders in Flatbush, gathering feedback on transit challenges and advocating for necessary improvements. Reporting to a senior organizer, canvassers will play a crucial role in efforts to enhance the experience of bus riders, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.
This call for Haitian Creole speakers comes amid a recent influx of Haitian immigrants to New York. Over the past two years, political instability has driven many Haitians to seek refuge in the United States. New York City has become a significant destination due to its established Haitian community and support networks.
This influx has been further facilitated by the Biden administration’s humanitarian parole program, enacted in January 2021, which allows up to 30,000 migrants per month from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to enter the U.S. on humanitarian grounds.
A federal judge recently upheld this key piece of President Joe Biden’s immigration policy, dismissing a challenge from Republican-led states. The policy, which seeks to provide lawful pathways for migrants from these countries, has seen significant participation from Haitians, with 138,000 individuals benefiting from the program since its launch, according to data from U.S. Homeland Security.
This part-time role entails 10-15 hours per week at a pay rate of $20 per hour. Canvassers will also receive MetroCards for travel expenses. Interested candidates should email a resume and cover letter to GSmithsimon@brooklyn.cuny.edu, using the subject line “Part-Time Canvasser Application.”
