One week after receiving criticism for ignoring an airline’s airport operations requests, Haiti’s National Airport Authority (AAN) announced Tuesday it will begin the necessary preparations for IBC Airways to fly between Miami and Les Cayes.
The announcement comes one day after AAN officials met with IBC’s representative to discuss requirements for the Florida-based airline to operate at the Antoine Simeon des Cayes International Airport. Completing the process will take at least two months before the first flight, ANN said.
“The discussions focused on the exhaustive evaluation of the technical and operational conditions necessary for the installation of the IBC airline, in strict compliance with civil aviation standards,” the July 22 AAN announcement reads.
One week prior, the airline condemned AAN in a Haitian Times exclusive for not responding to its six letters requesting the installation of cargo and office space containers at the airport.
AAN now says starting July 28, it will begin building out IBC offices and other necessary spaces —such as areas to process immigration, customs, Office for the Fight Against Drug Trafficking (BLTS) —for the route. AAN will also build a boarding lounge and install a mobile check-in counter for passengers.
For its part, IBC is responsible for installing two 40-feet containers for cargo operations and two 20-feet containers for the airline’s offices. IBC agreed to finish those installations by Aug. 15, according to the AAN note.
Both entries planned to meet again July 23 to evaluate the preparations further.
IBC did not immediately return a message seeking comment for this article.
IBC Airways initially planned to start flying to and from Les Cayes in mid-July after a successful test flight from Miami. However, between Haiti’s aviation operations malfunctioning due to lack of coordination between state entities and the country’s gang violence, talks between IBC and AAN caused a delay.
IBC said so far, it has spent $100,000 to operate the new route with Haiti, which it hasn’t flown into for 11 years. The airline, which specializes in cargo and charter flights, was an early carrier of passengers from Cap-Haïtien to Fort Lauderdale years ago.
Currently, it operates passenger flights from Fort Lauderdale, Guantanamo, Cuba, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to its reservations site. It is not yet known when options for the Miami and Les Cayes route will be added for travelers to book nor how much the fares will be.
Ever since Haiti’s main airport in Port-au-Prince was shut down due to rampant violence, travelers have had a painful time catching flights outside the northern region. To date, only Sunrise Airways offers flights from Haiti to the U.S., out of Cap-Haïtien.
