PORT-AU-PRINCE — The head of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), Edgard Gardy Leblanc Fils, officially presented Dr. Garry Conille with a copy of the decree naming him Prime Minister of Haiti on Monday at Villa d’Accueil in Musseau, a few miles from the National Palace in Port-au-Prince.
During a brief ceremony attended by representatives of political parties, civil society, and government officials, Conille, accompanied by his security staff, received the decree from Leblanc, who expressed optimism in the new prime minister’s ability to guide Haiti toward stability and progress.
Prime Minister Conille, for his part, reiterated his willingness to collaborate with the CPT members to ensure the transition’s success. This marks Conille’s second public appearance since his arrival in Haiti over the weekend, following his appointment by consensus of the CPT members on May 28.
On Sunday, he toured the gang-ravaged downtown Port-au-Prince alongside the director general of the Haitian National Police (PNH), Frantz Elbé, and some officers from different specialized police units. On the same day, the new prime minister visited people displaced by gang violence who had taken refuge in Lycée Marie Jeanne, a public high school located southeast of the Port-au-Prince city center.
A date for the installation of the new government led by Dr. Conille has yet to be announced. The local press reported Monday that the prime minister has begun discussing the formation of his cabinet with CPT members and a possible date for the installation. Meanwhile, Michel Patrick Boisvert continues to lead the outgoing government, managing current affairs until Conille takes over.
