Inside Haiti’s Road to the 2026 Elections: CEP Sets Aug. 30 as Tentative Voting Date

PORT-AU-PRINCE —The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) submitted an electoral calendar to the government and the Transitional Presidential Council, setting Aug. 30, 2026, as the target date for the first round of legislative and presidential elections.

The move gives the Haitian electorate its first real look at how the voting process could unfold — and allows the CEP to show the steps already completed and those still ahead.

After months of uncertainty, the submission of the calendar — along with a draft electoral decree prepared after consultations with political parties and civil society — marks an important step for Haiti as it works toward holding its first elections since the presidency of Jovenel Moïse.

In recent months, the CEP has already taken several actions:
• Recruiting members of the Departmental Electoral Offices
• Registering more than 200 political parties
• Assessing voting centers across nine departments
• Signing a broadcasting agreement with the national television station

Still, a long list of tasks remains. The CEP’s calendar includes 41 steps in total, with about 15 already underway since November.

Despite progress highlighted by Haitian authorities and the United States, the CEP says the calendar will move forward only if key conditions are met: prompt publication of the electoral decree, improved security, full funding, and continued technical work. Without these, Haiti’s elections cannot proceed.
