FERRIER, Haiti — After undergoing surgery for a broken arm, Jacques Sauveur “Jackito’”Jean, former senator, singer and agricultural entrepreneur, is on the mend and gradually resuming his normal activities. The surgery, which took place a month ago following a severe fall, was a success, leaving Jean’s family and friends relieved after initial concerns over his well-being.
On Wednesday, Jean, a prominent figure in both Haitian music and politics, sat down with The Haitian Times at his estate, T-Kanal Parc in Ferrier, Haiti’s northeasternmost commune bordering Dajabón in the Dominican Republic, to provide an update on his condition.
“I’m doing well, and I’m ready to keep fighting,” Jean said. “I am starting my therapy soon, and I’ll be back to normal in six weeks, the doctor says.”
The fall, which happened on Sept. 6 when Jean tumbled off the rooftop of one of his buildings at his T-Kanal Parc estate, left him with a severely injured arm, leading to surgery on Sept. 9.
The T-Kanal Parc is a tourist and historical site dedicated to preserving the irrigation canal of the Massacre River, an area of long-standing dispute between Haiti and the DR.

“I accidentally fell off the roof of one of my buildings at T-Kanal Parc and broke my left arm,” Jean recounted, describing the accident that set off the series of medical interventions leading to the surgery.
“It was serious, but I was taken to the hospital and operated on very quickly.”
Recovery amid fears
Now in the recovery phase, Jean’s left arm remains bandaged, the scars from the operation still fresh. Despite the discomfort, he continues to show determination, attending to his daily responsibilities, albeit with limitations. His posture and movements reflect the care he’s taking as he heals, but his gaze and demeanor convey a strong will to overcome the injury.
Despite the pain, particularly in his elbow, Jean remains upbeat about his progress.

“About a month after the operation, I am feeling better and better,” Jean said. “I had a check-up with my doctor on October 7 and am diligently following my prescribed treatment.”
He started therapy treatment on Oct. 10, which is expected to help him regain full mobility in six weeks, according to the former senator’s doctor.
For his family and friends, the ordeal was nerve-wracking. The agricultural entrepreneur’s relatives were particularly anxious in the lead-up to the procedure, worried about the potential complications from anesthesia.

“There were concerns because the operation was delayed several times, and we knew it would involve general anesthesia,” Jean shared. “It was a difficult moment, but I made it through.”
Jackito even recounted how his behavior before the surgery, including mumbling incomprehensible words, caused further worry.
“I told them to record me because I was saying things no one understood,” he said with a smile, reflecting on the fear and uncertainty surrounding the experience.
Belief in spiritual protection
The artist-entrepreneur turned politician attributes part of his recovery to his spiritual beliefs. According to him, spirits of higher power intervened to save him during his fall.
“I don’t know if it was mystical or just an accident, but I believe great spirits were watching over me,” he said. “I saw myself close to death, but I was spared.”
His faith and fighting spirit have been key factors in his ability to endure the ordeal and continue his recovery. “I’m determined to move forward, to heal fully and return to my work,” he added.
Despite the limitations his injury imposes, Jean has already begun managing some of his business activities at T-Kanal Parc.

Although he is still recovering, the agricultural entrepreneur has returned to overseeing projects at his estate. On Oct. 9, he was seen giving instructions to house builders and carpenters, guiding them through various tasks while being careful with his bandaged arm.
“With the arm as it is, I’m working, but I have to limit myself,” he admitted.
Looking ahead, the famous singer remains optimistic about his recovery and the future.
“What we need most is a strong spirit and morale. I’ll continue my work with the same heart and dedication,” Jackito said, sending a message of inspiration to others.
“Through this, I’ve learned that we can overcome our challenges even in the face of grave adversity.”
