CAP-HAITIEN — Nestled just six miles from Cap-Haïtien, the capital city of the Northern Department, the picturesque seaside village in Limonade is a hidden gem known for its breathtaking, untamed beach and rich tapestry of cultural and religious heritage.

Each year, on Sep. 5-6, the village, also known as Bord de Mer de Limonade — French for Seaside of Limonade bursts into life for its patronal festival, a captivating blend of Catholicism and Vodou that draws pilgrims and vodouisants alike from near and far.

Each Sep. 5, the village transforms into a vibrant tapestry of color and sound as musical groups and cultural activities fill the streets. The air reverberates with the joyous beats of drums and traditional instruments while dancers and artists from diverse backgrounds showcase their talents. It is a time when tradition meets modernity, and the village becomes a stage for social communion and artistic expression.

The following day, the festival reaches its zenith with a solemn mass in honor of Saint Philomena, held in the village’s historic church. The faithful come together for a genuine religious celebration, gracefully transitioning into a more reflective continuation of festivities.

Throughout these days, the village streets are a sensory delight. Street vendors offer a feast for the senses with the enticing aromas of freshly cooked local delicacies. Music fills the air as villagers and visitors alike dance with joy by the sea. The entire village pulses with a unique spiritual harmony and vibrant energy, painting a vivid picture that begs to be captured and shared. This celebration is not just an event; it’s an experience that encapsulates the soul of Bord de Mer de Limonade.

The atmosphere was the same for this year’s occasion. Here is a glimpse of the festivities held last week:
