Tonight’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is shaping up to be a pivotal moment in the 2024 election cycle. With a backdrop of significant social, economic, and geopolitical concerns, both candidates will have to address key issues that affect millions of Americans. Here are three key issues Haitian Americans should watch out for.
Immigration will undoubtedly be one of the top issues in the debate, especially considering recent controversies and rumors surrounding Haitian migrants, including one peddled by J.D. Vance, Trump’s vice president running mate. Vance openly criticized current U.S. immigration policies, arguing that the country should halt the acceptance of Haitian asylum seekers, painting them as a security threat. The treatment of Haitian asylum seekers has drawn widespread attention, and both Harris and Trump are likely to present starkly different visions for immigration reform.
Economic disparities and the challenges Black communities face will likely be a focal point of tonight’s debate. Under Trump, Black unemployment reached historic lows, which he frequently touts as evidence of his economic success. However, the pandemic exposed deep structural inequalities, disproportionately affecting Black Americans in terms of job loss and financial hardship.
Harris will likely focus on the Biden administration’s efforts to address these inequities, pointing to recent policies to create jobs and forgive student loans. Given that Black Americans hold more student debt and face higher unemployment rates than the national average, Harris may promote student loan forgiveness as a critical tool in leveling the playing field.
Haiti has been a constant focal point of U.S. foreign policy since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021 and the political and social unrest that followed his killing.
Harris will likely outline the Biden administration’s approach to Haiti, which has focused on providing limited financial assistance and attempting to support Haiti’s fragile government structure. Critics, however, argue that U.S. involvement has been insufficient, often reactive rather than proactive.
Trump’s foreign policy approach toward Haiti is more restrained, focusing less on aid and more on border security. The situation could be further inflamed by Vance’s recent remarks, where he suggested the U.S. should disengage from Haiti and other foreign policy commitments, arguing that resources should be focused on domestic issues, keeping in line with Trump’s “America First” stance.
