In recent weeks, Springfield, Ohio, has become a flashpoint for rising anti-Haitian sentiment after viral misinformation about the local Haitian community spread by Republican candidates Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance. In a video interview, Haitian residents express their growing concerns over how these baseless accusations have fueled division and fear. One resident captured the sentiment of many when he said, “When I heard a presidential candidate spread false information about Haitians without any evidence, I knew we deserve better than that.”

As the 2024 election nears, Haitian Americans in Springfield are grappling with the aftermath of Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric, which they fear could further marginalize their community. Another resident voiced deep concern, stating, “What I fear is when Republican candidate Donald J. Trump keeps using words to incite more division. The closer we get to the election, the more he speaks. His words are like bombs—wherever they land, they cause serious damage.” 

Despite the uncertainty, the Haitian community remains hopeful for healing and a return to normalcy, even as they brace for further repercussions of this hateful rhetoric.
