PORT-AU-PRINCE —Port-au-Prince presents a tale of two contrasting atmospheres. Since May while signs of revival are evident in some parts of the city, with increased street activity, bustling public transit stations, and vibrant merchant displays, the recovery is not uniform. Residents are cautiously resuming their daily activities after months of violent gang attacks. However, the city’s downtown area, particularly near Champ de Mars and some parts of Carrefour de l’Aéoport, remains a battleground, marred by ongoing gang violence. This has led to the relocation of public transportation hubs and markets to ensure the safety of residents.
Recently, schools have reopened, and the streets are once again filled with students in uniforms. Commercial banks are operating, in communes like Delmas, Pétion-Ville, and some neighborhoods near downtown Port-au-Prince. Currency exchange offices have resumed business. However, the city’s recovery is not uniform.
