Editorial note: Jean Gerard André is the father of Vania André, publisher and editor-in-chief of The Haitian Times.
Jean Gerard André, a committed husband, father, and friend, passed away on Jan. 23, 2025, in Haiti, the country he loved, after a life dedicated to family, hard work, and helping others.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1960 to Emmene Champagne and Alboth Pierre André, Jean Gerard began his career in the communications office of the National Palace under President Jean-Claude Duvalier. Following Duvalier’s ousting in 1986, he emigrated to the United States in pursuit of new opportunities. There, he met his wife, Ivena Calice, and they built a life together in the Cambria Heights section of Queens, NY.
A dedicated provider, Jean Gerard worked for over two decades at American Airlines — earning him the nickname “American” amongst his friends — ensuring his family had the stability and education he valued so deeply. Known for his easygoing nature and generous spirit, he found joy in music, laughter, and the company of his close friends.
In his 50s, Jean Gerard was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a battle that challenged but never defined him. In his later years, he returned to Haiti, where his people and culture could surround him.
Jean Gerard, is survived by his loving wife, Ivena; his children, Vania and Fitzgerald; his eldest brother, Jean Gerard, his sisters, Mona, Sonia, Yolene, and Mirlene; and a host of nieces, nephews, cherished family members, and lifelong friends across the U.S., Canada and Haiti.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, strong work ethic, love for music, and the generosity he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed.
A funeral was held for Jean Gerard in Port-au-Prince on Feb. 1, and a memorial service was held for him at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Cambria Heights on March 21.
