Political Transition Continues Without New Governing Body

Since February 7, 2026, Haiti has entered a new political phase. The Transitional Presidential Council (CPT) has expired. However, no new political body has replaced it.

For now, the Prime Minister and his cabinet manage daily government affairs. Yet, no official election date has been confirmed. Security concerns remain a major obstacle.

As a result, the country operates under administrative continuity rather than a new political consensus.

Security Reform and Police Restructuring

The Haitian National Police (PNH) is moving forward with reforms.

A new strategic training center is under construction in Morne-Casse, in the Nord-Est department. The project is funded by Canada and supported by the Organization of American States (OAS). It aims to strengthen specialized units fighting armed groups.

Meanwhile, the police union SPNH-17 is calling for better working conditions. It demands improved equipment, healthcare access, and regular promotions.

Justice and Institutional Stability

Haiti’s Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ) has reminded magistrates of their duty of political neutrality.

According to the resolution, judicial independence is essential to maintain public trust. This decision comes at a time when institutional stability remains fragile.

Vatican Appoints New Apostolic Nuncio

Internationally, the Vatican appointed Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti.

The experienced Nigerian diplomat will represent the Holy See in the country. The Catholic Church continues to play an important social role in Haiti, especially during crises.

Financial Modernization Efforts

On the economic front, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) trained commercial banks on the use of the Central Securities Depository.

This initiative aims to modernize the financial system. It also seeks to improve transparency and security in financial transactions.

Humanitarian Concerns Grow

humanitarian challenges remain severe.

UNICEF recently warned that child recruitment by armed groups has reportedly tripled in one year. The agency is urging stronger protection systems and additional funding.

Furthermore, more than one million people remain internally displaced due to violence.

Sports Achievements Offer Hope

Despite difficulties, Haiti has celebrated positive news in sports.

The U-17 national football team qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup after defeating Guatemala. This marks another major achievement for youth football.

In addition, skier Richardson Viano finished 44th out of 81 competitors in the men’s giant slalom at the 2026 Winter Olympics. It is a historic result for Haiti in winter sports.

Carnival Continues Despite Crisis

Finally, carnival celebrations continue in cities such as Pétion-Ville, Delmas, Cap-Haïtien, Les Cayes, Jérémie, and Jacmel.

Some citizens criticize the festivities due to the national crisis. However, others see carnival as a cultural expression and a moment of relief.
