Authorities announce strict enforcement as part of a broader national security effort to curb criminal activity.

Beginning March 6, 2026, vehicles operating with outdated license plates, non-compliant plates, or no plates at all will be prohibited from circulating throughout Haiti. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) in an official statement released on February 27.

Signed by Justice Minister Patrick Pélissier, the communiqué states that the measure forms part of urgent actions aimed at strengthening public security and restoring order nationwide. Authorities argue that unidentified or improperly registered vehicles have frequently been used in kidnappings, armed attacks, and other criminal operations.

Vehicle owners have been granted a strict, non-renewable compliance deadline ending on March 6. After that date, law enforcement officers have been instructed to apply the measure without exception.

According to the Ministry, vehicles found in violation will be immediately intercepted, towed, and placed under seizure. Drivers may also face legal sanctions under existing Haitian law. Officials emphasized that “no tolerance” will be granted once the deadline expires.

The government views this administrative control as a strategic security tool. Proper vehicle identification is considered essential for policing operations, criminal investigations, and intelligence gathering, particularly amid ongoing efforts to dismantle armed groups operating in various parts of the country.

The measure comes as Haitian authorities intensify operations aimed at restoring state control and reducing the operational mobility of criminal networks. The coming weeks will likely determine how effectively this policy contributes to improving security conditions across the country.
