More than 100 Haitian women and girls gathered on March 8 for the 5th annual Mothers & Daughters Luncheon in Chicago, an event aimed at fostering intergenerational connections and celebrating the strength of Haitian women.
Hosted by Daughters of Haiti at the Hilton-Oak Lawn, the sold-out luncheon provided a space for conversations on self-care, mental health, and the cultural experiences of Haitian women in America.
What started as a virtual gathering during the pandemic has since grown into an anticipated in-person event, reflecting a need for shared experiences and connection across generations.
“Being able to share the perspective of women that were raised with the same cultural background as myself with my daughter and my nieces is very important to me,” said Cyndee Montes Newman, founder and executive director of Daughters of Haiti.
“Helping them to fully realize what it means to be a Haitian woman and carry the pride and dignity of that responsibility is priceless.”
This year’s luncheon featured a panel discussion led by Haitian therapists, social workers, and psychologists, including Katriel Jean-Baptiste, Breanna Marcelin, Ameera P. Lyss, and Marie Bourgouin. The experts addressed mental health, self-care, and the importance of open communication within Haitian families. Attendees engaged in candid discussions, sharing personal experiences and supporting one another in a setting that encouraged vulnerability and empowerment.
Guests shared a three-course meal while reflecting on their shared heritage, reinforcing the power of community. The youngest guest was just five years old.
Proceeds from the event will support Daughters of Haiti’s initiatives, including health and wellness programs, educational workshops, and community outreach efforts focused on uplifting Haitian women and their families. The organization is also a proud supporter of Kay Manmito, a maternal waiting home at the University Hospital in Mirebalais, Haiti, which provides free lodging and support to mothers with complicated pregnancies and newborns in the NICU.
