Haiti U-20 men’s team begins 2026 Concacaf Championship with tough test against US 

MIAMI — Haiti’s U-20 men’s national soccer team kicks off the final round of its campaign for a World Cup ticket Saturday night, in what may be its biggest match yet. Les Petits Grenadiers will face regional powerhouse the United States in their opener of the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico. The tournament serves as a pathway to the 2027 FIFA World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan for that category.

Running from July 24 to Aug. 9, the competition will also serve as a qualifying route to the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

Despite the tough road ahead for the young Haitians, federation officials and fans alike are optimistic about the team’s chances of ‘killing three birds with one stone’.

“There is no issue; the team is prepared and has arrived at the competition in the best possible form,” Jeanty Thécieux, a spokesperson for the Haitian Football Federation (FHF), told The Haitian Times in a phone interview. 

“The players are focused on the challenge ahead and ready for their first match against the United States on Saturday,” Thécieux said on July 22.

Social media has been filled with messages in support of the team. Many encourage Les Petits Grenadiers to follow the example set by the senior squad, whose determination, ambition and pride during the 2026 World Cup qualifying inspired fans despite playing every game away from home because of Haiti’s security crisis.

“Play like grown men so we can qualify,” Facebook user Al-Shenky Hassad Lainé commented. “We just saw many great examples at the World Cup. If we can’t score, we shouldn’t concede either.”

For many Supporters across Haiti and the diaspora, this tournament offers an opportunity to build on the momentum generated by the senior national team’s historic return to the FIFA World Cup after a 52-year absence. They hope this new generation can write another chapter in Haitian soccer history by becoming the country’s first men’s U-20 team to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, as the U-20 women’s team did in 2018.

Local talent leads the way as team builds momentum

Unlike Haiti’s senior national team, whose World Cup roster consisted almost entirely of players developed abroad, the U-20 squad reflects the country’s domestic talent pipeline.

Most of the 21-player roster currently plays in Haiti, highlighting the continued development of youth soccer despite the country’s ongoing security crisis and the absence of a national professional league competition.

Only seven players are based overseas, including Orlando City Academy striker Nikolaï Pierre and five from Jamaica’s Mount Pleasant Football Academy: goalkeeper Clifford Gene, defender Dieuvens Résil, midfielder Miguel Joseph, and wingers Franco Celestin and Emerson Laissé.

Federation officials believe the blend of locally developed players and overseas talent gives Haiti a realistic chance to compete for one of Concacaf’s coveted World Cup four berths.

After watching the senior Grenadiers end a 52-year World Cup drought earlier this summer, Haitian fans are hoping the country’s next generation can achieve another historic first in Mexico.

Haiti arrived in Mexico after completing its domestic training camp with a 2-0 victory over Tabarre F.C. on July 11 at Saint-Louis de Gonzague High School Sports Complex in Delmas, Port-au-Prince. The match capped the team’s preparations on a positive note before departing for the tournament.

Les Grenadiers also impressed in a July 21 friendly, defeating Mexican second-division club Cañoneros F.C. 3-0, giving González another opportunity to fine-tune his squad before the championship opener.

Tough test ahead after pulverizing first-round opponents

Haiti, coached by Cuban manager Raúl González, enters the tournament after a perfect first-round qualifying campaign. But this tournament offers an immediate test of whether the country’s next generation is ready to compete with the region’s elites.

The young Grenadiers finished atop Group D with 12 points, winning all four matches and outscoring opponents 16-1. The lone goal against them came in their final group-stage game against host Curaçao on March 4, when they rallied for a dramatic 2-1 comeback to secure first place and advance to the regional championship round.

Now the team faces its toughest challenge yet in a group that includes the United States, Cuba and El Salvador.

The U.S. soccer team is one of Concacaf’s traditional powers at both the youth and senior levels. Its U-20 men’s roster includes players from top European leagues and Major League Soccer (MLS). Cuba and El Salvador, ranked in the top 10 in Concacaf’s latest rankings, won’t be a walk in the park either.

After the match against the U.S., Haiti will next face Cuba on July 28 and conclude Group A play against El Salvador on July 31. All three matches will be held at Estadio Universitario BUAP in Puebla.

After group play concludes, the top two teams from each of the tournament’s three groups, along with the two best third-place finishers, will advance to the quarterfinals on Aug. 4 and 5. The four quarterfinal winners will qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2027 Pan American Games.

The tournament champion will also earn a berth to the 2028 Summer Olympics. However, if the United States wins the title, the Olympic qualification spot will instead go to the runner-up because the Americans automatically qualify as tournament hosts.
