The former president says the initiative aims to expand access to agricultural education amid Haiti’s ongoing food sovereignty challenges.

Former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide has announced that agronomy studies will now be free at the University of the Aristide Foundation (UNIFA). The declaration was made on Sunday, March 1, 2026, during the institution’s graduation ceremony.

In his remarks, the former head of state highlighted his family’s longstanding commitment to education. He recalled that on the occasion of his mother’s centennial, celebrated on May 6, 2021, one hundred scholarships were awarded to students enrolled in agronomy. According to figures presented, 578 students have benefited from this support program since that date.

The decision to make agronomy studies free at UNIFA is presented as a continuation of that initiative. Jean-Bertrand Aristide described the measure as an effort to democratize access to agricultural education and to strengthen national capacity in what he considers a strategic sector for the country.

Agriculture remains a key pillar of Haiti’s economy despite significant structural constraints, including challenges related to infrastructure, security, and financing. In this context, training qualified young professionals is often viewed as a potential lever to boost local production and contribute to food security.

At this stage, no detailed information has been released regarding the practical implementation of the free tuition policy, eligibility criteria, or the exact date it will take effect. UNIFA is expected to provide further clarification in upcoming official communications.

The initiative comes at a time when access to higher education remains limited for many young Haitians due to financial constraints and persistent economic difficulties.
