Dumornay makes top 5 finalists for Globe Soccer’s best women’s player award

Melchie “Corventina” Dumornay has been named one of the five finalists for the 2025 Globe Soccer Awards’ Best Women’s Player, marking the first time the Haitian star has reached the top five of a major global individual award.

The winner will be announced Dec. 28 in Dubai.

The 22-year-old OL Lyonnes midfielder joins a shortlist dominated by European stars: Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí, the reigning Globe Soccer winner and two-time Ballon d’Or recipient; fellow Spaniards Mariona Caldentey and Alexia Putellas; and England international Alessia Russo.

Fans in Haiti and across the diaspora celebrated the milestone, seeing Dumornay’s nomination as a rare bright spot for the country on the global sports stage, along with the men’s team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Congratulations!” Marguerite Mompoint-Etienne wrote on Facebook. “So proud of you. At least we have something to show the world. We are not all  criminals, as they label us to be. First, we qualified for the world and now [this].” 

Mompoint-Etienne added: “Continue to show the world that once upon a time we were ‘La Perle des Antilles’, we will get the title back in the name of Jesus of Nazareth.”

A breakthrough, with tempered expectations

Dumornay’s Globe Soccer nomination stands out for placing her alongside some of the game’s most decorated players, despite limited international appearances this year.

She had her most productive and impactful year to date. She scored in four consecutive Champions League matches to help OL Lyonnes reach the semifinals and was the joint top scorer in France’s top division, D1 Arkema. She was also named the Champions League Young Player of the Season and Concacaf Player of the Year. It was her second time winning the accolade. 

However, the 22-year-old finished in 18th place in the France Football Ballon d’Or rankings. Analysts said Dumornay was ranked outside the top 10 despite a standout season in Europe, largely due to a lack of competitive matches with Haiti. Les Grenadières did not participate in any major tournaments in 2025. The limited international play also impacted her ranking in the Best FIFA Women’s Player vote, where she finished 11th.

Some fans also remain skeptical about her chances of winning.

“She deserves it, but we already know how politics work,” wrote  Instagram user Benjamin Joas, echoing a sentiment shared by many supporters.

Founded in 2010, the Globe Soccer Awards honor top players, clubs and executives across men’s and women’s football. Final winners are selected through a combination of public voting and a jury that includes former stars Ian Rush, Eric Abidal, Iker Casillas and Francesco Totti, as well as Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano.

Bonmatí won the women’s award last year. This year’s ceremony will also recognize the best men’s player, coach, club, emerging player and sporting director.

For Dumornay, the nomination alone represents a historic step — and another marker of her steady rise from Mirebalais to the highest levels of world football.
