NEW YORK — To say a lot is going on in the Haitian community would be an understatement.
Over the last several weeks alone, we’ve seen an array of dizzying decisions, declarations and executive orders from the Trump administration focused on creating the groundwork to strip away human rights and deportation protections from Haitians with legal status in the United States. Meanwhile, in Haiti, Port-au-Prince continues to deteriorate as the country’s citizens await a clear path toward political, social and economic stability.
Yet, behind all of this, we know there is much more to say. From places and people too often overlooked, we’ve found the voices of Haitian craftspeople using Vodou symbolism to celebrate heritage and sustainability, of a Brooklyn nonprofit securing property as a step toward collective wealth and of artists like Manuel Mathieu breaking new ground in Miami galleries while sharing deeply personal journeys of resilience.
These are stories of creativity, progress and pride that, too often, go untold. That’s the role of The Haitian Times. For 25 years and counting, we’ve documented our community’s evolution with context, care and clarity because we know that if we don’t tell our own stories, someone else will. And they won’t get it right.
Today, to make sure we continue, we’re launching a summer fundraising campaign to support this vital work. It’s a first for us because we too must evolve as the community and these times call on us to do so. In the weeks ahead, you’ll hear directly from the journalists and editors behind our stories about the work they do, why they do it and how you make it possible.
We’re aiming to raise $10,000 by August 10 to continue covering the stories that matter most to Haitians, and doing it well. With your support, we’ll deepen our reporting, invest in our journalists and ensure we can keep going during these unprecedented times of challenge.
We are not just a people defined by struggle. We are shaped by it, but we strive to overcome it wherever we go. That’s the story we’re committed to telling. That’s the legacy we’re building—with your help.
If you’ve read a story from The Haitian Times that made you feel seen, informed or empowered, I invite you to support us however you can.Make a donation today. Share our work. Help us keep telling the stories that reflect who we truly are.
