Resources for Haitians in Ohio seeking legal aid, housing and immigration support

COLUMBUS — The Trump Administration’s control of the White House and other branches of government has left many immigrants in limbo, waiting to see how policy changes affect their futures. After being targeted during the presidential election, thousands of Haitians in Springfield, Columbus and other Central Ohio areas are feeling particularly vulnerable. To provide support, many local organizations are collaborating closely to connect people with education, health, legal and housing resources and other essential services. 

Here is a list of resources available in Springfield and Columbus in particular, as of late January 2025. Some of the larger groups have collaborations around the country that may provide additional connections. 

Springfield, Ohio Area

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc (ABLE)

ABLE assists those who may be affected by homelessness, people who are new to local communities, specifically immigrants. They provide translation in Creole and French.

Haitian Community Alliance (HCA)

HCA is a consortium of more than 50 organizations providing language services to ensure the integration of Haitians in the community. They have a Creole Connect Hotline to help people settle in the new community.

Haitian Community in Springfield, Ohio Facebook

A group of Facebook users who have come together to form a strong community. It’s open to anyone to join.

Haitian Support Center (HSC)

The Haitian Support Center aims to assist refugees and immigrants from the Haitian community with resources for housing, interpretation and employment. Though based in Springfield, HSC collaborates and supports Haitians that live beyond Springfield.

Columbus, Ohio Area  

Community Refugee & Immigration Services (CRIS)

CRIS provides a variety of employment, family and legal, education pathways and youth mentorship services, including some programs catering to refugees, asylees and other immigrants. It has language resources for those who need Haitian Creole or other language translation.

Community Shelter Board (CSB)

CSB has a hotline for those experiencing homelessness and need access to temporary shelter and long-term housing. Through March 31, 2025, CSB provides access to Warming Centers.

Diocese of Columbus – African and Haitian Ministry 

The Office of Catholic Ethnic Ministry provides and promotes pastoral care of Haitian Catholics in Columbus and the surrounding areas. The ministry promotes community engagement through religious services.

Haitian Community Network (HaCoNet)

Haitian Community Network’s goal is to connect Haitians to resources related to education, health and government. It brings Haitians together for community events that serve as a catalyst to heal communities and create opportunities.

Jewish Family Services (JFS) 

JFS helps people secure employment as they navigate the local job market. They provide a comprehensive set of services from resume preparation, interview readiness training, to job placement assistance.

Legal Aid Society of Columbus

The Legal Aid Society of Columbus provides free legal assistance to those with little to no income in need of financial resources. They provide language services to those who need it as well.

Ohio Haitian Association

This is a group of Facebook users who have come together to support the Haitian community through partnerships for education and advocacy. They host events for the community to network. Anyone can join.

Rentful 614

Rentful 614 is a list of organizations that helps individuals and families at risk of eviction with rent assistance and resources for housing options. This list is updated on an ongoing basis.
