PORT-AU-PRINCE — Despite the challenges of escalating gang violence and a climate of insecurity in the Haitian capital and its surroundings, Haiti’s largest annual book fair, Livres en Folie, successfully occurred on Aug. 15. The one-day literary event delighted thousands of book enthusiasts, particularly young people, who flocked to the Karibe Convention Center in Pétion-Ville to purchase their favorite books at discounts of up to 50%.
Originally scheduled for May, the event was postponed due to safety concerns but went ahead as planned, marking a significant cultural triumph for the nation.
The 30th edition of Livres en Folie brought together about 90 writers, showcasing their newly-published works among approximately 1,100 titles. This gathering of authors, publishers, and readers was a testament to the unwavering determination of the Haitian literary community. The event provided a platform for contemporary Haitian literature to thrive, even amidst the country’s ongoing crises.
The fair’s successful execution is particularly poignant given the backdrop of recent attacks on cultural institutions, including the vandalism of the National Library of Haiti and the ransacking of the premises of Le Nouvelliste, the event’s organizer for the past 30 years. Despite these adversities, the book fair stood as a powerful symbol of Haitian grit, underscoring the importance of culture and education in Haiti’s darkest moments.
Celebrating Haitian culture
Participants from various sectors attended the fair, viewing it as an opportunity to celebrate Haitian culture. Among the notable attendees were Prime Minister Garry Conille and Edgard Leblanc Fils, president of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT). Their presence underscored the fair’s significance as a beacon of hope and an intellectual celebration in the face of adversity.
“I am here to encourage all initiatives, all social activities in the country, but above all to support production and creation,”said Leblanc during his visit to the Karibe Convention Center. “Haitians need spaces that can unleash their full potential,” the CPT’s president added.
The fair not only celebrated the intellectual wealth of Haitian writers but also reinforced the community’s commitment to preserving and promoting Haitian culture. By bringing together a large audience, Livres en Folie reminded everyone of the enduring power of literature to inspire and unite people, even in challenging times.
The event served as a valuable opportunity for individuals lacking access to socio-cultural activities to gather, meet, and engage in meaningful discussions. Additionally, it provided a platform for high-ranking state officials to address and inspire young attendees.
At first glance, the 30th edition of Livres en Folie was a resounding success from all perspectives. However, the growing popularity of the fair, particularly among young people, highlights the need for a larger venue to accommodate the increasing number of participants and ensure the event’s continued success in the future.
