CAP-HAITIEN — Haitian American sprinter Christopher Borzor did not qualify for the second round of the 100-meter after finishing in fifth place in Heat 8, running it in 10.28 seconds at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Saturday.
Borzor went head to head with some of the world’s fastest men in his heat, such as 2021 Olympics silver medalist Fredrick Lee Kerley and Great Britain’s 100 and 200-meter record holder Zharnel Hughes. Kerley (9.97 seconds), Letsile Tebogo (10.01) and Hughes (10.03) qualified for the next round in Borzor.
Borzor made it to the first round after he finished first in Heat 4 of the preliminary round, running the race in 10.26 seconds. The New York native is the first athlete who did not get eliminated in his or her first outing at the Olympics.
Borzor, also a University of Cincinnati sprinter, is Haiti’s record holder for the 100-meter. Borzor broke the record at the NACAC New Life Invitational at The Bahamas National Stadium on June 15, 2024, running the sprint in 10.14 seconds.
Also on Aug. 3, swimmer Mayah Chouloute notably finished second in Heat 3 of the 50-meter freestyle even though she is only 14 years of age. Chouloute swam the 50-meter in 29.78 seconds. Although she finished second in her heat, Chouloute did not swim fast enough to qualify for the next round.
Before Chouloute and Borzor on Saturday, four athletes competed for Haiti and were eliminated in their first outings, swimmer Alexandre Grand’Pierre, Judoka Philippe Metellus, gymnast Lynnzee Brown and boxer Cedrick Belony-Dulièpre.
The next and last athlete who will represent Haiti is hurdler Emelia Chatfield, who is scheduled to compete on Aug. 7.
