Haïti’s Southeast Bassin Bleu is a dive in paradise 

JACMEL–  Bassin Bleu, is a renowned natural haven, known as the crown jewel of Haiti’s southeast department. It is located in Jacmel, the main city, which is approximately 88 km from Port-au-Prince. The area features stunning swimming pools, waterfalls, and caves that harmoniously coexist, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Jacmel.

Situated in Petite-Rivière de Jacmel, Bassin Bleu is both the name of the site and the locality. It is located 12 km west of the city of Jacmel. With its four stunning pools and a breathtaking waterfall, Bassin Bleu is frequently praised as an idyllic destination that should not be missed by anyone traveling to Haiti, especially to the southeast department.

Getting to Bassin Bleu is an adventure in itself, but the experience is truly rewarding. The journey from Jacmel takes approximately 30 minutes by motorbike. The unparalleled reward at the end of this thrilling ride makes it all worthwhile. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a series of four pools that offer a captivating spectacle. There is one for everyone. 

The Bassin Cheval is the first stop for guests who want to take a dip, given that it is the shallowest of the pools, with a depth of 2.7 meters.

Next is the Bassin ‘Yes’. According to one of the site guides, an English-speaking Canadian who once lived there and owned a restaurant on-site, named this pool. This 4.6-meter-deep pool is popular among skilled swimmers.

As one progresses, the pools deepen. The third pool, Bassin Palmiste, reaches a depth of 17.4 meters, while the final pool, Bassin Clair, is adorned with a spectacular waterfall and is 22.8 meters deep.

Reaching the last pool without a guide is challenging. To access it, one needs a rope and assistance from someone on-site. For proficient swimmers, it’s a real joy upon arrival in the pool.

“I am on my third visit, and I always take great pleasure in visiting this site where life is good,” Jonathan Edouard, who lives in Port-au-Prince, told The Haitian Times.
