CAP-HAITIEN — Four athletes have competed for Haiti so far at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, swimmer Alexandre Grand’Pierre, gymnast Lynnzee Brown, judoka Philippe Metellus and boxer Cedrick Belony-Dulièpre. Although they won the hearts of scores of Haitians worldwide, all of them were however eliminated in the first round.
Grand’Pierre was the first athlete to represent Haiti in swimming, competing in the 100-meter breaststroke on July 27. Grand’Pierre swam the race in 1:02.85, finishing fourth in his heat and in 28th position overall out of 35 participants. Only the first 16 swimmers qualified for the semi-finals, hence Grand’Pierre was eliminated.
At just 21 years of age, Grand’Pierre holds Haiti’s record for the 50, 100 and 200-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley. He is the third member of his family to swim at the Olympics for Haiti, following the footsteps of his sisters, Naomy and Emilie Grand’Pierre.
Later on July 29, Brown mesmerized Haitians all over the world with an exquisite vault routine, in which she scored 13.566 points. The Missouri native also dazzled her audience during her floor routine, tallying 12.233 points. In her other routines, Brown racked 11.500 points in the uneven bars and 11.533 points in the beam, earning 48.832 points in total.
Despite a stunning overall performance, Brown did not rack up enough points to move to the next round, finishing in 59th position.
Brown was the first ever gymnast to represent Haiti at the Olympics.
After her performance, judoka Philippe Metellus bowed down to Thailandian Terada Masayuki, 11-0 on Monday, failing to qualify for the next round as well.
Later on Tuesday afternoon, boxer Cedrick Belony-Dulièpre was also defeated in a disappointing scoreline, getting whitewashed by Brazilian Wanderley Pereira 5-0.
Next up for Haiti, swimmer Mayah Chouloute will compete in the 50-meter freestyle and Christopher Borzor will run the 100-meter sprint on Aug. 3. After their performances, Emelia Chatfield will run the 100-meter hurdle on Aug. 7.
