Haitian communities in the Diaspora have been struggling with financial scams resulting in significant losses in the community. These scams often exploit the desire for quick financial gain with aspirations for better opportunities, such as obtaining visas and more.

Following recent stories highlighting how pervasive these financial scams are in the community, The Haitian Times hosted a community conversation on June 18 to discuss red flags the community should be on the lookout for. The Haitian Times’ special projects editor, Macollvie Neel, led the conversation with input from the audience including Alphonise Piard, program manager for a financial literacy program, and Leonie Hermantin, director of communications and development at Florida-based nonprofit Sant La.

During the conversation, Neel gave an overview of recent cases in the community like the NovaTech investigation, where a Haitian duo in New York swindled the Haitian community out of about $1 billion in cryptocurrency. Attendees also joined in sharing their experiences with fraudulent schemes.

Below is a recording of the conversation.
