PORT-AU-PRINCE—Dr. Garry Conille, newly appointed Prime Minister of Haiti’s transitional government, arrived in the country Saturday. Selected on May 28 by consensus of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), Conille will now begin forming a new government to replace the resigned administration of Ariel Henry.

Dr. Conille, a former Prime Minister under former President Michel Joseph Martelly and former UN official, flew into Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince aboard a Sunrise Airways flight from Miami, Florida. He was greeted by the high command of the Haitian National Police (PNH), including the institution’s Director General Frantz Elbé.

On May 30, before he departed from Panama City, Panama, where he last resided and worked as UNICEF’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Haitian transitional prime minister delivered his first official speech to the nation via a pre-corded video. He outlined his vision for the transition government, emphasizing a focus on inclusivity and competence.

“Accompanied by all the presidential council members, I will do my best to ensure that this transitional period is successful.”

Conille promised a cabinet that would include “young people, women and representatives of the diaspora who are competent, honest, credible and patriotic.” He also stressed the importance of collaboration, stating in Creole, “Accompanied by all the presidential council members, I will do my best to ensure that this transitional period is successful.”

The transitional PM indicated that in collaboration with the presidential council, he would ensure that the transitional government reflects the courage, generosity, resilience and diversity of the Haitian people

Conille’s arrival marks a critical juncture for Haiti, a nation grappling with a complex set of challenges, including rampant gang violence, economic instability, and the need to restore constitutional and democratic order. He has pledged to work with all stakeholders to lead the country toward prosperity.

In his video address, he said that Haiti would not perish. “Today, I stand before you with great humility and a profound sense of responsibility and commitment to our beloved country,” he stated. “Our journey ahead is fraught with challenges, but together, we can rebuild and restore hope for a brighter future. I would not accept this responsibility if I could not count on the solidarity of all Haitians.”

Conille’s appointment, following a selection process that saw him chosen from a pool of 200+ applicants, has been met with positive reactions from international leaders. The Organization of American States (OAS), Kenya’s President William Ruto and the U.S. Department of State have all expressed their support for the process and pledged to work collaboratively with the new government.

Despite the major challenges that await us, Conille said he was convinced that a step has been taken in the right direction to restore Haiti. “It is the first time, in several generations, political groups and long-time competitors of different tendencies agree on an independent, non-partisan personality, who will help them rebuild democracy,” the new PM pointed out.

A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the State University of Haiti with a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in addition to studies at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) in New York, Conille brings about 30 years of experience to the role

Conille faces a monumental task in leading the transitional government. Restoring security, regaining economic recovery and organizing elections in 2025 are among his top priorities. His administration’s success will have significant implications for Haiti’s future.
