NEW YORK-Haitian-born author and journalist Dany Laferrière, a towering figure in contemporary literature and a member of the prestigious Académie Française, is the guest of honor at the third edition of Festival en Pays Rêvé. Taking place across 18 venues in Martinique, the festival, which runs until November 24, 2024, celebrates the transformative power of literature under the theme, The Power of the Book.
Laferrière, whose works often explore the immigrant experience and the beauty of human connections, will present his latest collection, “Un Certain Art de Vivre, The book,” a lyrical meditation on life, travel, solitude, and love, showcases the depth and introspection for which he is known. His acclaimed novels, such as “Eroshima,” “L’Odeur du Café,” and “L’Enigme du Retour,” have cemented his place in literary history.
Festival founder and celebrated author Viktor Lazlo underscored the event’s mission of showcasing global literary voices while confronting the challenges of today’s world.
“More than ever, we must tell stories to denounce horror and injustice, ensuring that our overburdened minds do not fall asleep. And more than ever, we must tell of the beauty of the world, which persists against all odds,” said Lazlo in a statement.
This year’s festival brings together 16 writers from four continents, including acclaimed authors like Alain Mabanckou, Suzanne Dracius, and Tania de Montaigne, alongside three Martinican writers.
Highlighting its global reach, the festival welcomed a group of students from the Arts, Letters, and Communication program at Collège Maisonneuve in Montreal. In addition, collaborations with local institutions, such as the University of the Antilles and the Martinique Academy, have allowed the festival to extend its impact to students and communities throughout the island.
The event also features outreach programs, enabling authors to visit the Ducos Detention Center, fostering the festival’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
In Laferrière’s words, literature is an enduring testament to the human spirit, making his presence at this festival a celebration of resilience, creativity, and connection.
